Even though it looks great when first purchased, over time, like almost any outdoor surface, it’s going to require a new coat of paint. There are a few things to keep in mind when you decide to paint wrought iron.
You need to prepare the surface before you apply the new paint. The main thing to consider when you are doing this preparation work is dealing with any rust on the iron. When wrought iron is constantly subjected to the mood swings of Mother Nature, rust is going to be a result. There are a few things you can do to remove the rust before you begin the actual painting process. If you paint right over rust you will only be masking the problem and not treating it.
Sandblasting is incredibly effective. If you’ve got a fence or gate crafted from this metal you might want to consider buying a sandblaster. The reason is that if you paint wrought iron every year or two, you’ll also be removing rust each time. It can get to be expensive if you constantly rent a sandblaster. The decision is completely up to you though.
Another method that seems to work well to remove rust is with a wire brush. Sandpaper can do the job as well, but it should be a coarse variety. Once you’ve removed the rust with one of these approaches, wipe the surface clean before you paint wrought iron.
The paint you choose needs to be specifically manufactured for use on metal. Many people make the mistake of buying exterior paint to paint wrought iron. This will work initially but in time it will likely begin to flake off. A paint that specifically states on the label that it is a rust inhibitor is the best route to go.
You can apply the paint in a couple of different ways. If the area you need to cover is large a sprayer might save time. Many people who have to paint wrought iron fences use this approach. You’ll need to wear protective clothing along with a face mask to ensure you don’t inhale any of the paint. Don’t attempt to do this on a windy day as more of the paint will end up on you than on the fence.
A good old-fashioned brush is still the choice of most people. You have much better control with a brush and you can get into all the small nooks and crannies of the surface. If you prepare the wrought iron item properly and take your time painting it, you’ll have a great looking finished project.
